If
you have agreed to become a volunteer, you should think of this
as a commitment and consider the following expectations we have
of our volunteers:

If you have committed yourself to teach a class, we are counting
on you to be there. If you cannot make it, you are responsible
to find your own substitute.

Be prepared. If you are teaching a class, know what you are
going to do each day. Use your imagination when planning your
classes. Ask me for ideas. Most girls will get along if they
are kept busy and interested. Make the first two classes especially
exciting so the girls will want to come back.

If you are teaching a class, pick up your class folder and supplies
from me when you get there. Use the class list in your folder
to take attendance. Return the folder and supplies to me.

I am here to help you with any concerns you have as a volunteer.
Feel free to discuss any problems, suggestions or needs with
me.

It is important that you talk to the girls in a pleasant manner.
Some girls need a lot of encouragement. Others just need someone
to listen. Remember that these girls really look up to the volunteers.
Try to resolve any problems in a calm and mature way. The girls
are learning from you, even when you don't realize it. Again,
I am here to help you in situations where you may need help.

We are extremely lucky that no girls have been seriously injured
at Girls Inc.®
of Jackson County. This can continue to be true only if we keep
constant watch over girls and equipment. You may need to remind
girls of their safety rules.
If an accident does occur, stay with the injured girl and send
someone for me. You may be asked to fill out an accident form
later. DO NOT PANIC! If you keep your cool, it will help the
other girls around you keep their cool. A good way to avoid
accidents is to never leave your class unattended. Be aware
of what your girls are doing at all times.

You are in charge of your group. If a girl is causing trouble
repeatedly, report her to me and explain the circumstances.
I will take steps to correct the situation. If immediate steps
need to be taken, you may excuse yourself momentarily from the
group, leaving one of the girls in charge, to go with the misbehaving
girl to me.
Yelling at children and threatening them is no solution. We
must all try to resolve any problems in a calm and mature way.
There is no reason for you to be abused, and I am ready to help
you in situations where you may need help.
